Inspired by a personal experience, this story is not about one thing. It’s centered on beauty standards revolving hair in the black community, but it’s also about being stuck in the past, the power of the tongue, discovering self-worth, and moving forward even when you don’t know what lies ahead. I once straightened my hair in 8th grade in search of acceptance by my white peers, and it ended up being one of my very few regrets in life. But now it’s time to let go. I wrote this hoping I can inspire others who may be going through anything similar, even if it’s far removed from hair. Forgive yourself.

Dear black girl, your hair is beautiful. Not because it’s long, or short. Not because it’s 3A or 4C. Even if you shaved it all off! Never be ashamed of your blackness.
