Inspired by a personal experience, this story is not about one thing. Itβs centered on beauty standards revolving hair in the black community, but itβs also about being stuck in the past, the power of the tongue, discovering self-worth, and moving forward even when you donβt know what lies ahead. I once straightened my hair in 8th grade in search of acceptance by my white peers, and it ended up being one of my very few regrets in life. But now itβs time to let go. I wrote this hoping I can inspire others who may be going through anything similar, even if itβs far removed from hair. Forgive yourself.
Dear black girl, your hair is beautiful. Not because itβs long, or short. Not because itβs 3A or 4C. Even if you shaved it all off! Never be ashamed of your blackness.
